Houston Travel

When you want to get to where it’s hot in the sun, all the time, you might want to travel to Houston. This larger city might not get all of the Texas credit that Austin does, but it certainly can help you have a fun time on even a short vacation. With a number of interesting neighborhoods and attractions, you and the family will have a good time – even if the kids still think you’re lame for not taking them to Disneyland.

Neighborhoods to Visit

One of the best ways to get to know a city is to visit the different neighborhoods. This will give you a chance to get to know the various groups of people who live in the area and what cultures are represented. In Houston, for example, you can wander through these neighborhoods:

  • Downtown
  • The Heights
  • Med Center and Rice
  • New Chinatown or Asiatown
  • Southwest Houston
  • Uptown or The Galleria Area Warehouse Midtown

Try to take some time to start in Downtown, but then move out from the center to see what these other neighborhoods can offer. Some have little gingerbread house like homes while the other areas have yuppie hotspots and shopping for the person who likes to spend money on vacation.

Get Out of the Hotel

Instead of sitting in the hotel room and trying to figure out what else to eat from the room service menu, try getting out for a change. There is plenty to explore in Houston, including:

  • Battleship Texas and San Jacinto Battleground Monument
  • Buffalo Soldiers National Museum
  • Chase Tower Observatory
  • Children's Museum of Houston
  • Contemporary Arts Museum
  • Discovery Green Park
  • Diverse Works
  • Downtown Aquarium
  • Downtown Tunnel System
  • The Health Museum
  • Hermann
  • Houston Museum of Natural Science
  • Houston Holocaust Museum
  • Houston Ship Channel Boat Tour
  • Houston Zoo
  • Memorial Park
  • Menil Collection
  • Museum of Fine Arts Houston
  • Rothko Chapel
  • Space Center Houston
  • Williams Tower

Yes, any of these trips will take you all day, helping you to get the kids tired and the adults ready to drink.

Getting to Houston

There are a number of ways that you can get to Houston, including by plane, but if you’re ready for something that’s a little nutty, but exciting, the best way to travel is by car. This way, you can see the surrounding areas and get to know Texas on the way into the city. Whether you’re coming from California or Massachusetts, you will want to try moving a little slower on this vacation. And that means using the car instead of the faster plane option.

If you’re ready to head to Texas, you now have a lot of things to consider before you make your plans. With so much to do, you will actually have to choose your favorite items instead of planning to do it all. There just isn’t enough time.
